Canada Food Guide Changes!

The Canada Food Guide has had some changes recently and they may surprise you from what you grew up learning!

The unfortunate reality for an increasing amount of people in Canada, is that 50% or more of their diet is coming from highly processed foods, added sugars and saturated/trans fats. This is why the Canada Food Guide has seen some dramatic shifts in recommendations and mindset.

For the last forty years the food guide focused on having main food groups that you needed to get a certain amount of servings from each food group. Now the food groups have changed by dropping dairy and emphasizing more fruits, veggies and whole foods.

Below are some of the most notable Canada Food Guide changes that have been made:

🍀No more four food groups.

🍀A less prescriptive approach (allows for flexibility with different dietary needs).

🍀Eat fewer processed foods (added sugars etc).

🍀Drink more water.

🍀Reduce dairy intake (limit trans fats and saturated fats).

🍀Use mindful eating habits to create a healthier relationship with food.
